£49.00
Very scarce 1737 English edition of Alain René Le Sage's (1668-1747) classic picaresque novel. *ONLY* volume 1 of 3. 320pp. Printed for J. Tonson, at Shakespear's-Head in the Strand. (100x165x30mm) This appears to have been the first English translation, predating Smollett's by a dozen years. Condition is Fair to Good with 1786 monogram on inside cover, significant tear to the blank sheet following with another, later owner's signature. All pages are clean with some minor foxing spots here and there and a few dog ears. The spine is dry and cracked but still holding together at upper front half, leather cover and gilding worn but fair.
