Gottfried Bernhard Loos 1773-1843 was a German medallist and mint-master in the family tradition. The son of Daniel Friedrich Loos (1735-1819), one-time General Warden of the Prussian Mint, a medal die maker and designer of coins and medals. Moreover, he was given the title of Prussian Court Medalist and was made a member of the Berlin Academy.
Gottfried and his brother, Friedrich are both known to have learned the art of coin and medal making from their father. Indeed, Gottfried collaborated with his father to produce more than 300 medals "of personages, and commemorations of historical events." Here is one such medal struck in 1809 as a gift of the children of parents celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
This unique 1809 solid silver medal, presented here in very fine condition, commemorated the 50th wedding anniversary of wealthy Frankfurt merchant Alexander Gontard (b.17.08.1733 - d.25.04.1819) and his wife, Marianne Caecilia du Bosc (b. 22.09.1738 - d.29.10.1819) and was commissioned from Loos by one or more of their children: Jacob Friedrich Gontard, Cécile Madeleine Gontard, Henriette Marie Gontard, Sophie Francoise Franziska Gontard and Georges Louis Gontard.
The inscription translated into English reads something like: "In harmony, love and gratitude, consecrated to the best parents for their 50th wedding anniversary". The obverse reads: "HERRN ALEXAND GONTARD UND FRAU MAR CAECILILA GEB. DUBOSC VON IHREN SIE INNIGST LIEBENDEN KINDERN - FRANKFURT A.M. D, 9 JAN 1809"
